The Phipps Children's Theater will produce the area premier of Disney's "The Little Mermaid, Jr.," featuring music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and the book by Doug Wright, which is based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen and the Disney film, Feb. 8-24 at The Phipps Center for the Arts. In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the fun-loving and mischievous mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above.
The Phipps Dance Company is preparing for its eighth annual performances on Friday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m. at The Phipps Center for the Arts. The 2012-13 company is comprised of 13 auditioned dancers who range in age from 13 to 18. It is led by artistic directors Barb Suick and Stephanie Campbell. Included in the versatile concert this year are modern, ballet, hip-hop, tap and Bollywood selections.

The St. Croix Valley Bird Club is sponsoring speaker Joanna Eckles on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Roberts Public Library, 311 West Warren St. the meeting is from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Eckles will speak on "Protecting birds from the hazards of our built-up world." She works with the Audubon Minnesota Society on the issue of bird collisions with buildings and other structures. This meeting is free and open to the public.
Afton State Park will host a candle-lit hike from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2. The trail is two miles and suitable for hikers of all ages. Snowshoeing will be a possibility if there is enough snow. Following the hike park and trail visitors can warm up around a fire and roast marshmallows or enjoy a hot drink. Five Barbershop quartets from the "Croix Chordsmen Chorus" and one from the Vallee de Croix, Sweet Adelines, will be on the road with "Singing Valentines," on Feb. 14. For a donation to their Youth In Harmony fund of $40, their "Singing Valentine" Quartets will travel all over the eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin area to serenade lucky recipients for Valentine's day. They will sing two songs, present a rose, box of candy, a personalized card and provide a photo of the event, too.
A series of exhibitions featuring a mixed media installation by Mary Bergs, Minneapolis; mixed media printmaking by CathyJean Clark, Neillsville; oil paintings by Tom McGregor, St. Paul; ceramics by Ursula Hargens, Minneapolis; acrylics on panel by Leslie Pilgrim, Mendota Heights, Minn.; journal drawings and watercolors by Tara Sweeney, St. Paul; and a group exhibition featuring work in a range of media by 11 local artists who participated in a series of seminars during 2012 focusing on the role of art and sustainability will be on view through Feb.

The public is invited to the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Hudson United Methodist Church, 1401 Laurel Ave. Sunday, Jan. 27, to hear music performed by the Alzen Family from Roberts. The Alzen Family are winners of the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old Time Music Association 2006 Family Area Talent Contest. The Alzen Family plays gospel bluegrass music which the whole family can enjoy.
