State legislators are again considering tougher penalties for drunken drivers (Assembly Bills 69, 70, 71).
ELLSWORTH -- Every year, fairs across the United States make a big impact on their community. This year, the goal was to make that impact even bigger.

The world’s largest relay series returns to Minnesota and Wisconsin this weekend, Aug. 16-17, when over 2,600 runners from over 300 teams take part in the 203-mile long Ragnar Relay Great River from Winona to Minneapolis. The two-day overnight relay race will take participants through southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin, including both River Falls and Hudson. Runners will begin in downtown Winona Friday, Aug.
Mother Nature can gently spread her beauty or throw some nasty tricks at earth’s inhabitants. In the event of the latter, the public needs to be ready. Safety regarding tornadoes, for example, should be uppermost in people’s minds. The following advice is in the interest of listening, acting and living: —In a home or building, avoid windows. Move to a basement and get under a sturdy table or the stairs. A specially-constructed “safe room” within a building offers the best protection.
Kathy Falteisek, widow of the late Roman Falteisek, found this photo of her father-in-law, John Peter Falteisek (died 1963), on the right, and an unidentified man on the left. The Falteisek family would love to know more about the photo, especially information on the unknown man. On the back is written “caught by J.P. Falteisek, June 7, 1947, weight 8, length 30” and girth, 14”.
HUDSON HOSPITAL Caleb Alexander Sykora was born on Tuesday, July, 16, 2013, weighing nine pounds, 11 ounces and 20 inches long, to Dana and Josh Sykora of River Falls.
Just about the time you think you’ll scream if you’re confronted with another monumental biography, another epic movie, an enigmatic play about T.E. Lawrence, along comes journalist Scott Anderson with a monumental tome, titled “Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of The Modern Middle East” (Doubleday, $28.95).
In a climate with a relatively short growing season, it’s important to get outdoors whenever possible. One doesn’t need to go far. Locales as close as the back yard offer opportunities to be in touch directly with nature. Gardening has long been known as a great way to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.
