Nearly 1,100 farmers and agriculturists from across Wisconsin attended the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation's 98th annual meeting and Young Farmer and Agriculturist Conference, Dec. 1-4 in Wisconsin Dells. Delegates from Pierce County included Laura Benitz of Maiden Rock, Peter Kimball of River Falls and Kevin Knutson of Beldenville. Farm Bureau delegates adopted the policies that will guide the legislative agenda for the state's largest general farm organization in 2018. Resolutions were submitted by delegates as part of a grassroots policy development process.

Prescott High School senior George Wazlawik is the Dec. 13 Prescott Kiwanis Student of the Week. He was nominated by math teacher Bryce McCauley, who said "I have chosen George as the student of the week because of his positive attitude and hard work in the math classroom. As a senior, George is taking AP Calculus where he is an active participant who is always ready for class and willing to help others. In addition, he has done some volunteering during Cardinal Time to help tutor students that need extra support in math.

The following incidents were investigated by the Ellsworth Police Department Nov. 27-Dec. 3. Tenant troubles • Police responded at 8:36 p.m. Nov. 27 to 575 N. Maple St., where a main floor of an apartment was flooded with water. Police assisted by turning off the water to the leaking valve. The landlord arrived a short time later.

Plum City Middle/High School has named its first quarter honor roll recipients for the 2017-2018 school year. Starting Sunday, Nov. 26, the major U.S. tobacco companies began running federal court-mandated TV and print ads highlighting the negative health effects of smoking and secondhand smoke, as well as how the tobacco industry designed cigarettes to be more addictive. These ads are a result of a 2006 federal court ruling which ordered the tobacco companies to issue corrective statements after finding that they had deliberately deceived the American public about the health effects of smoking and industry plans to market tobacco to kids. Prescott High School sophomore Anna Welter is the Dec. 6 Prescott Kiwanis Student of the Week. She was nominated by media specialist Joan Simon, who said "Anna is an avid reader and an active member of the PHS Library Book club and the PHS Library creative writing club called "Writer's Block." A gifted writer, Anna recently had one of her works published in an online magazine title "Teen Ink." Anna shines inside and out and is always willing to participate in the activities the library hosts.
