ELLSWORTH -- A mother on the way to the hospital with her sick baby stopped to get help at Speedway Wednesday morning, but the baby died. "The baby wasn't breathing," Shari Duhrkop, manager of the local convenience station and store said Friday. Duhrkop said she called 911 and soon had two ambulances plus the private vehicles of several emergency medical technicians arrive at the business in the village's midway district.
PLUM CITY -- Ashley Hinrichs' 20-point, 10-rebound performance Tuesday night in a 42-39 victory is the main reason the No. 3 Blue Devils didn't suffer back-to-back WIAA Division IV playoff losses to No. 6 Eleva-Strum. Last season the Cardinals -- as the No. 3 seed -- knocked out the No. 6 Blue Devils in Eleva. "We really didn't play our best, but we played well enough to make it through," Hinrichs said. Fellow sophomore Amanda Daleiden added 10 points for Plum City, and also stepped up as the Blue Devils' No.
Nancy Ortwerth dared to challenge her boss because she thought she could do a better job running the Pierce County Sheriff's Department. Voters agreed, electing her 7,832-6,108 over Everett Muhlhausen. "It looks like it's going to be a whole new adventure," Ortwerth said shortly after midnight today. The 40-year-old DARE officer got her start working in the Ellsworth Police Department in 1989, where she patrolled and helped with investigations.
