A Prescott man charged with first-degree attempted homicide will see his case go before a jury at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 12 in Pierce County Circuit Court. Dennis Allan Frank, 66, also faces aggravated battery by use of a dangerous weapon and false imprisonment charges stemming from an Aug. 15 incident at 635 Pine St. in Prescott in which Frank is accused of stabbing his roommate, a 51-year-old woman who was rushed to Regions Hospital for emergency surgery. The charging document states she lost about 2 liters of blood during the episode.
A 60-year-old New Richmond man was airlifted from the scene of a motorcycle crash at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23 in the town of Trimbelle. The man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of family, was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with life-threatening injuries. According to a Wisconsin State Patrol news release, the man lost control of a 2008 Honda motorcycle on County Road O near 430th Avenue. He was driving alone and not wearing a helmet.
An Elmwood man and former Junior Redbirds football coach faces three felony charges after allegedly soliciting sex from a minor online. Daniel Bengtson, 32, was charged with sexual assault of child under 16, child enticement and use a computer to facilitate a child sex crime Monday, Sept. 11 in Eau Claire County Circuit Court. He was released on a $2,000 signature bond with provisions that prohibit him from having any unsupervised contact with minor children nor internet contact with anyone under age 16.
It's the first day of fall, but you wouldn't know it by the sweltering forecast for Wisconsin. Afternoon highs will be in the 90s in southern and western portions of the Badger State -- and the heat index could reach 100 in the La Crosse area and the upper 90s in the Milwaukee and Madison regions. The National Weather Service says the unseasonably hot air mass will hang around through the weekend, and we won't see a major cool down until Tuesday when parts of the state could have highs in the 60s.
Ellsworth Community School District Supt. Barry Cain reported at the Sept. 14 board meeting that the district will solicit bids for Hillcrest Elementary's asbestos removal in October. "We would not be going out to bid for Prairie View for some time yet," Cain said regarding asbestos findings in that building. CESA 10 Environmental Services provided cost estimates for asbestos removal of $250,000 for Hillcrest and $150,000 for Prairie View, which Cain said were seen as "very safe numbers for budgeting purposes."
Prescott Daze celebrated the 10th anniversary of the clock tower, which welcomes visitors at the Highway 10 bridge, Sept. 8-10.
Ellsworth High School's career class, taught by Mrs. Katie Christenson, visited the Pierce County Herald's sister newspaper facility in Red Wing Friday, Sept. 8. The Red Wing Republican Eagle building houses not only that newspaper, but a print plant where thousands of shoppers and newspapers from around the region are printed each week.
The 2017 annual charity Diva Dudes male pageant, held Sunday, Sept. 10 at Ellsworth High School Cafetorium, was a night filled with musical talent, dancing like you've never seen and jokes that brought laughs (plus a few groans). The fundraiser, organized by Mrs. Anne Pechacek and the EHS Just Do Something Club, raises money for a different charity each year. The 2017 proceeds will go to the Pierce County Food Pantry and Hurricane Harvey relief funds.
Ellsworth High School crowned its 2017 Homecoming royalty Sunday, Sept. 10 during the annual charity Diva Dudes Pageant at EHS Cafetorium. The honors went to King Nathan Hinrichs, Queen Rachael Sullivan, Senior Prince Drake Flom, Senior Princess Anna Olson, Junior Princess Claire Straub, Sophomore Princess Riley Schumaker and Freshman Princess Nadia Thurmes. The Ellsworth Panthers will take on the Somerset Spartans at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15 following the annual chili cook-off and Homecoming parade. ELLSWORTH -- Xcel Energy crews are working to restore power to Ellsworth residents Thursday, Sept. 7. According to an outage map on the Xcel Energy website, an estimated 1,379 customers have been affected by three outage orders. The cause of the power loss is unknown at this time, but reportedly began about 8 a.m. Power is expected to be restored by 5 p.m., according to the outage map.
