GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers have locked up the leader of their secondary, after signing safety Morgan Burnett to a four-year contract worth a reported $24.3 million dollars. The Packers did not immediately announce the deal. NFL.com said Burnett is getting an eight-and-a-quarter million dollar signing bonus, and he can get up to 26-million with incentives.
NEW YORK CITY - Jean Segura calls his fast promotion to the Milwaukee Brewers a “dream come true.” He faced the national media in New York yesterday, less than a year after he went from being a Double-“A” prospect to a National League backup at shortstop for tonight’s All-Star Game. Segura was in the Angels farm system at this time last year, when he was traded to Milwaukee in the deal that sent Zack Greinke out West.
MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Department of Health says a Milwaukee hospital will take all the necessary precautions, involving a patient diagnosed with a drug-resistant super-bug. A spokesperson for the department says CRE is a drug-resistant strain of bacteria that’s commonly found in the gut. CRE can spread to the urinary tracts and bloodstream, where it can be deadly.
MILWAUKEE - The UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball team will go back to playing its home games downtown. The Panthers scrapped the idea of playing in a smaller arena on campus, which they did last season. Starting this fall, they’ll be back at the U.S. Cellular Arena for at least the next five years, with 17-percent less rent than they had two years ago and a smaller facility fee per ticket.
NORTH MANKATO, Minn. -- A 34-year-old North Mankato man has been arrested after leading police on a high speed chase in the nude. Nicollet County dispatchers received several calls that a naked man was standing on a bridge in Seven Mile Creek Park yesterday making lewd gestures. When officers arrived the man had left the park, but witnesses were able to provide a good description of his car.
SILVIS, Ill., - Madison’s own Jerry Kelly shot a five-under 66 yesterday, putting him in striking distance for the top spot in the final round of the John Deere Classic in Illinois. With a 15-under for the tournament, Kelly is in a two-way tie for fourth. Kelly completed six birdies but found some trouble on the sixth hole, where he shot a bogey on a par-four.
Two players from the Plum City Blues were named St. Croix Valley League Players of the Week. Chris Biederman was named Position Player of the Week as he hit two home runs and drove in three RBIs in the Blues' 5-0 win over Bay City. His teammate Tony Garner was the winning pitcher from the game as he struck out 13 BC batters and gave up just two hits.
WEST MILWAUKEE - Authorities are investigating a bomb scare at a West Milwaukee Walmart. Milwaukee police say a man alerted employees about a bomb in the store at 5:27 p.m. last night. The store was evacuated and a police searched turned up nothing. Police say the incident remains under investigation and the man involved was not arrested.
Four Wisconsin residents are facing serious fraud charges, after allegedly scamming thousands of people out of two-million dollars in fees to sell timeshares. 39-year-old Mark Parks, 34-year-old Mindy Parks, 28-year-old Ashley Conant and 51-year-old Eileen Goltz were arrested earlier in the week.
