MADISON - Hudson High School wrestler Nick Larson finished fourth in the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. Larson's fourth place came in the Division 1, 152-pound weight class. Larson split the two matches he wrestled Saturday in the placing round at the Kohl Center, both of which went into overtime.
MADISON - River Falls' Logan Cudd was ahead of Hartland Arrowhead's Adam Yde 5-1 at point of the Division 1, 125-pound final at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. But a pair of of penalty points in the third period cost Cudd the state title in a 6-5 loss Saturday evening at the Kohl Center. Cudd scored a takedown in the first period to lead 3-1 and extended the lead to 5-1 after another takedown in the second. But Yde escaped from Cudd and then scored a takedown of his own to make the score 5-4 at the end of the second.
MADISON - Oconto Falls' Jake Morrissey No.1 ranking at 171 pounds became offical as he defeated Somerset's Haydon Dvorak by technical fall in the WIAA Division 2 state finals Saturday evening at the Kohl Center. Dvorak had good initial leverage on Morrissey in their initial tie-ups but once the undefeated sophomore(42-0)got going he was able to win 16-0 in 4:27. "We knew what he was good at and Haydon tried to stay away from it but he's a champion for a reason," Somerset head coach Grady Radabaugh said.
MADISON - Spring Valley-Elmwood's Brady Webb will try to win the state championship which eluded him last year in Saturday's WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament finals. Webb made back to the finals with a 6-0 win over Mineral Point's Deven Walrack in the Division 3, 112-pound semifinals. He'll take on Coleman senior Chett Birr (33-7). Webb scored his points in the second period. Riding Walrack, he was able to score two three-point nearfalls.
MADISON - Six wrestlers from the Rivertowns area won their semifinal matches last night at the Kohl Center and will be back there again Saturday evening for the WIAA State Individual Tournament finals. The wrestlers are Ellsworth's Jens Lantz at 103 pounds, Spring Valley-Elmwood's Brady Webb at 112 pounds, Ellsworth's Roarke Langer at 125 pounds, River Falls' Logan Cudd at 125 pounds, Somerset's Haydon Dvorak at 171 and Ellsworth's Parker Hines at 189. Cudd had the most dramatic win of Friday's semifinals match-ups.
MADISON - Somerset's Haydon Dvorak will wrestle in the 171-pound, Division 2 finals Saturday evening at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. Dvorak beat Adams-Friendship's Dustin Kirsenlohr by a 6-2 score in Friday evening's semifinal match. Dvorak scored an escape at the start of the second period and the benefited from an error on Kirsenlohr's part on a shot which caused him to fall down. Dvorak landed on him and the score became 3-0. "I stayed in good position," Dvorak said.
MADISON - There's reason why Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln's wrestling program is one of the best around, not just in Wisconsin but in the nation as well. It's because they produce good individual wrestlers like Zak Benitz, who handed Hudson's Nick Larson a 3-1 semifinal loss at 152 pounds in the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament Friday evening at the Kohl Center. Benitz scored a takedown in the first period but Larson scored and escape in the second and trailed just 2-1 heading into the third period. Benitz scored an escape to start the period.
MADISON - After giving up a takedown in the third period of his semifinal match at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, River Falls wrestler Logan Cudd made sure to tell himself there was only one way he could wrestle to win the 125-pound, Division 1 match and get to the finals. "I said to myself this is my senior year and I'm not going to stop until I've won," Cudd said.
MADISON - Ellsworth High School's wrestling team will get three chances to win gold at this year's WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. The Panthers will have three Division 2 finalists led by Jens Lantz at 103 pounds, Roarke Langer at 125 and Parker Hines at 189. Lantz had no trouble beating J.J. Donar from Cuba City-Southwestern by a 13-0 major decision. Lantz dominated from beginning to end. Langer was in control for nearly all of his semifinal match against Luxemburg-Casco's Zach Skarda.
MADISON - It was another successful round for the Ellsworth High School wrestling team. The Panthers have five wrestlers competing in the semifinals of the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. Spring Valley-Elmwood's Brady Webb is also in the semis. The Panthers' Jens Lantz made it at 103 pounds he shutout Sheboygan Falls' Alex Fitzgerald 11-4. Roarke Langer was just as stingy as he beat Freedom's Devin Bera by a 9-1 score at 125. D.J. Yarwood started strong and held on for a 9-6 win over Mosinee's Jordan Roosa at 140.
