Two amateur baseball players from Pierce County were named St. Croix Valley League Players of the Week for their efforts in last week's ballgames. Ellsworth's Storm Gram was named Positilon Player of the Week.
ELLSWORTH - Even a 6-1 lead in eighth inning was not secure enough for the Ellsworth Hubbers. Prescott rallied for four runs in the eighth and ninth innings to beat Ellsworth 8-6 Wednesday evening at Young Field. Ellsworth pitcher Britton Wolf pitched through six innings and Hubs' first baseman J.P Paulson hit two homers and drove in three runs. But Prescott loaded the bases in the top of the eighth for Nick Johnson to clear with a double. Johnson himself scored on an RBI-single by Jim French and Pirates were within one at 6-5.
MILWAUKEE - Two Milwaukee police officers were planning to ticket a speeding drive. Instead, they helped deliver a passenger’s baby. Officers Adam Bradley and Xavier Benitez were on a downtown patrol Wednesday night, when they saw a car racing up Water Street. When they pulled it over, they saw 21-year-old Brenda Alva in labor.
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A man is dead after a four-hour standoff with SWAT officers at a home near Bemidji Wednesday evening. Officers were called to a home to check on a distraught man threatening to kill himself, and say 34-year-old Miquell Deppa was armed with a rifle and also threatening to kill responding officers.
MILWAUKEE - The Chicago Cubs won their first series in Milwaukee in almost three years, after beating the Brewers 7-2 yesterday afternoon in the rubber game of their three-game set at Miller Park. The Cubs pulled away with a four-run rally in the third inning which made it 6-nothing at that point. Caleb Gindl and Juan Francisco committed key errors before Dioner Navarro belted a three-run homer.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota right-hander Samuel Deduno pitched seven strong inning to lead the Twins to a 3-1 win over the Royals at Target Field last night. It was the first of four games between the two teams. Deduno allowed one run and five hits as he jumped to 4-and-2. Justin Morneau was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Minnesota had lost four of its previous five games. Salvador Perez accounted for the only Kansas City run with a homer.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Minnesota Timberwolves made some noise at the NBA Draft last night in Brooklyn's new Barclay's Center. The T'wolves selected Michigan guard Trey Burke ninth overall and then traded him to Utah for UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad, who was chosen 14th overall, and 21st overall pick Gorgui Dieng out of Louisville.
PLUM CITY - Plum City's American Legion Post 365 junior legion baseball team edged Durand Tuesday evening 10-9 at Legion Park. Levi Wolf was the winning pitcher and Jake Ingli got the save for PC. Ryan Asher hit double with an RBI, Ben Funk hit a two-RBI triple, Hunter Freyholtz hit a standup double with two RBIs and Tyler Freyholtz also hit a double. Plum is 3-2 overall and play at Mondovi Friday at 3 p.m. They also have a tournament this weekend in Antigo.
Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Placido Polanco and Jeff Mathis each hit two-run homers to help lift the Miami Marlins over the Minnesota Twins, 5-3, to complete a two-game sweep at Marlins Park. The homers were the first of the season for both Mathis and Polanco, with Polanco finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Bucks will be the 15th team on the clock tonight when the NBA Draft takes place. That’s about the middle of the first round, and Bucks’ general manager says it’s hard to tell who would be the best players available at that point. Milwaukee also has the 43rd pick in tonight’s second round.
