WIAA regional tournament championships in baseball will take place today from one end of Pierce County to the other. In Spring Valley, the Cardinals, the No. 2 seed in its Division 3 tournament, takes on No. 4 seeded Mondovi at Syverson Park with the first pitch at 5 p.m. In their only meeting this season just a week ago, Mondovi, the Dunn-St. Croix Large Division champions for the first time-ever, downed the D-SC Small champs 6-3. And in Hager City at Brown Field, it's Ellsworth-Prescott III, the championship of the Division 2 regional tournament.
Get ready for the rubber match. Ellsworth and Prescott's prep baseball teams will meet for the third time this season on Friday in a WIAA Division 2 regional tournament championship with EHS, as the top seed in the tournament, hosting. First pitch will be at 5 p.m. Prescott advanced to the finals with a 3-0 regional semifinal win over Baldwin-Woodville at Firehall Field in Prescott. Owen Schommer had three hits and scored a run to lead PHS. Teammate Mike Brookshaw drove in a run. Brady Schommer tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts to get the win. No.
CHIPPEWA FALLS - The Spring Valley High School golf team finished 10th in the WIAA Division 3 Chippewa Falls McDonell Sectional meet held at Lake Wissota Golf Club. Taylor Leach had SVHS's best score with an 18-hole 86. Other Cardinal scores were Jason Richardson 89, Jordan Jensen 102, Mitchell Wittmer 120 and Blake Katt 135. Leach finished 16th individually and Richardson was 26th. SV's overall combined score was 396. The meet medalist was McDonell's Thomas Longbella as he shot a 70.
HAGER CITY - Survive and advance is the name of the game when it comes to tournament play and that’s what the No. 3 ranked Ellsworth High School baseball team did Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals of their WIAA Division 2 regional tournament at Brown Field. After being held scoreless through three innings, No. 1 seeded EHS plated three runs in the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth to beat No. 5 Altoona 4-1. Both teams had an even number of hits and were almost even in errors.

Plum City High School's baseball team won its WIAA Division 4 regional first round contest over Clear Lake 12-2 in six innings yesterday in Clear Lake. However, PC's fellow Pierce County D-4 team Elmwood, was beaten in eight innings by Glenwood City at home by a 5-4 score. Plum City scored a run in every inning, including three in the top of the sixth which ended the game early by 10-run rule. Ben Funk, Anthony Ebensperger and Chris Longsdorf all had two hits for PC. Funk and teammates Austin Coss and Dylan Hovland all had two RBIs.
The WIAA Division 2 regional tournament semifinal game between No. 3 ranked Ellsworth and Altoona will be played this afternoon at 1 p.m. at Brown Field in Hager City. The time was moved up from the usual 4:30-5 p.m.start time because of Altoona's commencement exercises this evening. With the early start time, Pierce County baseball fans can enjoy several WIAA regional semifinal games today. Up Hwy. 35, Prescott hosts Baldwin-Woodville at 5 p.m. at Firehall Field in Division 2. Down the Great River Road in Alma, Plum City will be in action against Alma/Pepin, also a 5 p.m.
CUMBERLAND - A lackluster front nine effort was more than made up by a spectacular showing on the back nine by the Ellsworth High School boys' golf team at the WIAA Division 2 Cumberland Sectional today. And that back-nine effort on the Cumberland Golf Course pushed the Panthers past Hayward by a single-stroke to qualify them for the state golf meet next week in Madison for the first time since 2000. Osceola won the sectional title with a score of 315 and Ellsworth was second with a combined score of 338, beating out Hayward's 339.
WIAA baseball regional tournaments and golf sectionals are big prep sporting events involving Pierce County teams Tuesday. BLOOMER - Ellsworth's Brett Freier won two titles at the WIAA Division 2 Bloomer Track and Field Sectional Friday. Freier won both hurdle races. He took first in the 110-meter high hurdles in :15.01 seconds and he was first in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in a time of :40.77 seconds. Pierce County will have two girl's relay teams in Division 2 state meet next weekend in La Crosse. Prescott's 3200-meter relay team took third in a time of 10:10.57. Team members are Amanda Murphy, Annika Carlson, Savana Stuhl and Alysse Lewis.
