The Pierce County Herald's Athletes of the Week are Prescott's Matt Holman and Ellsworth Joanne Lanegran. Holman hit a grand slam to help the Prescott baseball team top Somerset and his pitching led the No. 6 ranked Cardinals to a 6-1 win over New Richmond, both last week. Lanegran was a winner in a pair of meets the Ellsworth girls track team was in last week. She won individually in the pole vault and in a team with the 800-meter relay squad. It was a day for individual more than team achievement for Pierce County's prep track and field teams in their respecitve conference meets Tuesday. At the Middle Border meet in Osceola, Ellsworth's girls finished fifth and the boys were sixth. Prescott's boys placed fourth and the girls sixth. At the Dunn-St. Croix meet in Mondovi, EPC's boys took sixth and the girls finished seventh. Spring Valley's boys were fourth and the girls placed eighth. The Ellsworth girls' 800-meter relay team was the lone county girls' champion at the MBC meet.
The Ellsworth High School baseball team clinched a share of the Middle Border Conference Tuesday through a win and an assist. The No. 2 ranked Panthers won at Baldwin-Woodville 5-3 while No. 6 Prescott was upset at Osceola 2-0. The Chieftains scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie. PHS still outhit Osceola 10-4. The league title is Ellsworth's second in a row and 10th in school history. Prescott hasn't been eliminated from the league title chase just yet but they'll need to win Thursday at home vs.

Several conference meets in a variety of prep sports will take place Tuesday. Beginning this morning at the Middle Border Conference golf and boys' tennis meets. The MBC golf meet takes place at Bristol Ridge in Somerset while the tennis meet is at Baldwin-Woodville. The afternoon are the MBC and Dunn-St. Croix Conference track and field meets. The MBC Meet begins at 4 p.m. in Osceola while the D-SC is in Mondovi and begins at 3 p.m. The D-SC golf meet was to take place yesterday in Pheasant Hills Golf Course in Hammond but was rained out as was all of the prep schedule Monday.
SPRING VALLEY - Ellsworth High School golfer Emery Whalen shot a season-best 74 on the Spring Valley Golf Course to the meet medalist title at the Spring Valley Invitational Saturday. Somerset won the team title shooting a 311 with Ellsworth taking second with a score of 317. Spring Valley finished third with a score of 387. Whalen edged out Somerset's Danny Green and Will Gauper by a single stroke. Ellsworth's Mike Tingelhoff shot an 80 to finish fourth.
Pierce County prep softball teams received their regional tournament assigments. The pairings meetings for WIAA regional softball tournaments took place Wednesday and the tournament brackets were released Thursday. First round games are next Thursday. The semifinals are on may 27 and the finals are on May 29 with the highest seeded team hosting. In Division 2, Ellsworth is the No. 4 seed and gets No. 5 Osceola in the first round. The No. 8 ranked Spring Valley High School baseball team is no longer undefeated. The Cardinals lost a non-conference game at Durand 2-1 Friday. The Ellsworth HIgh School softball team has now eight straight Middle Border Conference softball games. The Panthers swept a doubleheader at Osceola Thursday by scores of 19-2 and 10-5. The wins improve Ellsworth's overall record to 11-4 and their MBC record to 9-3. However, the Panthers winning streak faces its biggest test today as EHS goes to Baldwin to face No. 1 ranked Baldwin-Woodville, owners of a 53-game conference winning streak. The Blackhawks clinched the MBC titled outright yesterday with a doubleheader sweep at Somerset. First pitch for today's contest is at 5:00 p.m.
