The prep golf season is now underway with the first Middle Border Conference meet taking place Monday at Clifton Highlands Golf Course in Clifton with Prescott hosting. Osceola won the meet edging New Richmond 162-163. Ellsworth finished third with a nine hole score of 174 followed by Amery 182, Somerset 183, Prescott 196, Baldwin-Woodville 218 and Durand 219. Osceola's Dan Cronick had the best individual score with a 36. Spring Valley's golf team competed in a Dunn-St. Croix meet at Glen Hills, Golf Course in Glenwood City. The Cardinals finished third with a score of 194.
PRESCOTT - For the first time since 2009 the Prescott High School boys' golf team did not finish in last place in the Middle Border Conference during the 2013 season. The Cardinals hope to keep moving up the MBC standings in 2014 as they return four lettermen from a squad which placed seventh in the league and eighth in the regional meet out of 11 teams. "Our challenge is to finish in the top half of the league and I think it is doable given who have coming back and where we're at as a team so far," PHS head coach Jay Bartsch said. ELMWOOD - Elk Mound handed Elmwood/Plum City's softball team its first loss of the season 11-4 Monday afternoon. The Dunn-St. Croix Conference contest was close up to the sixth inning. The Mounders, 4-1 overall, led 3-2 and then outscored the Wolves 8-2 in the sixth and seventh innnings. EPC was hurt by six errors. Addie Morrell had two hits to lead Elmwood/PC and Taylor Chilson and Cheyanne Catura both hit doubles. EM was led by Makenna Borofka's two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. EPC drops to 2-1 overall and in the D-SC.
HAGER CITY - The Ellsworth High School baseball team stayed unbeaten after defeating Bloomer 8-6 in a non-conference game Monday at Brown Field. The Blackhawks, 0-4 overall, led 4-0 after the top of the second but the Panthers, 6-0 came back by scoring seven unanswered runs by the fourth inning. EHS held the lead for the duration of the game with Eric McGregor getting the win. Ellsworth was helped by six Bloomer errors. Dan Giese had two hits and scored a run for the Panthers and teammate Dennis Schutz cracked a double and scored a run also.

Prescott High School's baseball team is staying right with Ellsworth in the Middle Border Conference standings, win for win. PHS downed New Richmond Thursday at home 8-2 to go 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the MBC. The Cardinals built up an 8-0 lead by the third inning and kept NR off the board until the seventh. In other prep scores from Thursday: Baseball: Mondovi 11, Elmwood 7 Softball: Alma/Pepin 12, Spring Valley 4 Softball: Baldwin-Woodville 12, Ellsworth 1 (5 inn.) The Spring Valley baseball and Prescott softball games were postponed due poor field conditions.
HAGER CITY - Ellsworth High School's baseball team improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the Middle Border Conference with a 4-2 over Somerset Thursday at Brown Field. Nick Taranto and Eric McGregor both drive in two runs for the Panthers and Dennis Schutz and Logan Armstrong each had two hits. EHS outhit the Spartans 9-2. Ellsworth plated a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to go ahead an break a tie with the Spartans. Armstrong was the winning pitcher and McGregor got the save. Ellsworth hosts Bloomer Monday at Brown Field.
SPRING VALLEY - Spring Valley and the rest of the Dunn-St. Croix Conference are some of the first are prep golf teams to hit the links this spring. The Cardinals participated in the first D-SC meet of the season hosted by Colfax at Whitetail Golf Course back on Tuesday. SV finished fourth with 209 strokes. Defending D-SC champ Glenwood City won the meet with a combined score of 169 followed by Mondovi 191, St. Croix Central 195, Spring Valley 209, Elk Mound 234 and the host Vikings 250.
BALDWIN - Spring Valley and Ellsworth's track and field teams competed in a seven-team meet at Baldwin-Woodville’s King Field Tuesday Eau Claire Regis won both the boys' and girls' meets. Spring Valley's boys tied for fourth with Glenwood City with 84 points each while Ellsworth finished sixth with 66.5 points. EHS’s girls’ team finished in fourth place with 55.33 points and Spring Valley was fifth with 47 points. Spring Valley’s defending state champion won his first triple jump event of the season. He finished first in the event with a leap of 42 feet, 11 inches.
