MADISON - Ellsworth High School had one of the largest contingents of participants at the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament, 12 in all. But that number was cut in half after Thursday evening's Division 2 preliminary round action at the Kohl Center. Only Dennis Schutz at 182 pounds and Brock Steldt at 195 advanced to Friday morning's quarterfinals.
MADISON - Kevin Fesenmaier will join five of his Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestling teammates in today's quarterfinal round of the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center. Fesenmaier, 38-10 overall, defeated Ruben Hill (34-12) of Kenosha Christian Life by a 3-1 score in the prelim round in Division 3 at 170 pounds. He was able to get his takedown in second period and stayed on control of the match throughout. He will face Lancaster's Ethan Soderstrom (20-3) in the quarterfinals, which begin at 11:15 a.m.
MADISON - The 71st WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament begins at 3 p.m today at the Kohl Center. The Division 1 preliminary matches start the day's action followed by D-1 quarterfinals at 5:15 p.m. Division 2 and 3 prelims will begin at 7:15 p.m. It will be a big day for the Ellsworth High School wrestling team as they will have eight of their school-record 12-person contingent competing this evening.

Ellsworth wrestler Jacob Fuchs, Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestler Kevin Fesenmaier and Plum City girls basketball player Sarah Gilles are the Pierce County Herald's Athletes of the Week. Fuchs, a senior, won a pair of matches for the Panthers in the WIAA Division2 Ellsworth Team Sectional and also qualified for his first state WIAA State Individual Tournament at the sectional meet Saturday in Amery. Fesenmaier, also a senior, helped SVE win a Division 3 team sectional title for the second time in three seasons with a pair of wins and then came back through the wrestleback rounds to qualify
Plum City and Elmwood's prep boys' basketball teams will begin play in WIAA regional tournament this evening. PC has a first round match-up at Coachrane-Fountain City while Elmwood is at Gilmanton. Plum City is the No. 6 seed and C-FC the No. 3 seed in this particular Division 5 regional. The Blue Devils enter tournament on a nine-game slide. But a new season gives the Blue Devils a chance to start over.
Plum City High School's girls basketball team swept the season series with Elmwood, winning 48-38 at Elmwood Monday evening. The Raiders stayed almost even with PC but the Blue Devils stayed ahead thanks to having three players in double figures led by Cheyanne Catura's 15 points, Elaina Danzinger's season-high 14 points and Sarah Gilles's 12 points. While Plum City struggled at the free-throw line, they were able to make 6-of-10 in the crucial fourth quarter.
