The Ellsworth Village Board will take up a proposed ordinance to allow modified golf carts on village streets.
The Pierce County Herald Prep Athletes of the Week are Ellsworth HIgh School wrestler Gabe Frandsen and Plum City High School girls basketball player Cheyanne Catura. Frandsen won first place in the prestigeous Cheesehead Invitational last weekend at 160 pounds, beating two nationally ranked wrestlers to do so. Catura sank the game-winning shot in Plum City's 62-60 win over rival Alma/Pepin at Pepin last week. She also led her team in scoring with 20 points. The Pierce County Herald Athletes of the Week award is sponsored by State Farm Insurance - Denton Achenbach Agency of Ellsworth.
The Prescott High School wrestling team took fifth in the 11-team Burnsville, Minn. Invitational over the weekend. The Cardinals had three finalists in Saturday's meet with Troy Urman winning the 152-pound finals. Alex Stuhl came in second at 132 and Tyler Miller was second at 182. Sam Hoopinggarner, Jonah Luksich at 113, Paul Hansen at 126 also placed in the top six. Just 24 hours before, the Cards' hosted a four-team dual meet event. Prescott defeated Durand 37-30 but lost to River Falls 46-33 and Eden Prairie, Minn. 37-33.
Other Pierce County school districts announced today they will be closed Monday due to the extreme cold temperatures forecasted. PEPIN - Cheyanne Catura's three-point basket with :.3.9 seconds reamaining in the ballgame gave the Plum City High School girls' basketball team a 62-60 non-conference win over Alma/Pepin Thursday. Catura led all scorers with 20 points. Two of her teammates, Elaina Danzinger and Sarah Gilles both were in double figures scoring as well (16 and 14 points respectively) The Eagles, 1-5 overall, led 29-23 at halftime before the Blue Devils, 2-4 overall, outscored them 39-31 in the second half. Fresh off of winning the Bi-State Classic, the Ellsworth High School wrestling team isn't resting on its accomplishments, or resting period. This weekend the Panthers are in Kaukauna to take part in the annual Cheesehead Invitational, which brings in some of the top high schools teams from around the country to wrestle against some of Wisconsin's best teams like Ellsworth and strong teams and programs from around the Midwest like Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln or St. Rita's of Chicago and Omaha North. CLAYTON - The Spring Valley High School boys' basketball team won twice in the Clayton Invitational this past weekend. The Cardinals defeated Turtle Lake on Friday by a 62-39 score and the SV downed Prairie Farm on Saturday 60-52. The wins improve Valley's overall record to 6-1 before playing its next ballgame vs. 9-2 Prescott in Prescott next Monday at 7:30 p.m.
