SOUTH ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Prescott High School boys' basketball team won the South St. Paul Holiday Classic over the weekend. The Cardinals defeated Park High School of Cottage Grove, Minn. 62-50 on Friday and then edged North Branch, Minn. in the championship game Saturday 69-64. The wins improve PHS's overall record to 9-2 before they face Ellsworth in a first-place showdown in Middle Border Conference on Jan. 7 in Ellsworth. Before that game the Cards' will play their final non-conference game Jan. 6 at home vs.
An arctic cold front has shattered the spring-like weather across the state the past few days. The National Weather Service in Sullivan says wind chills of minus-20 to minus-30 degrees dropped the mercury from the 30s to single digits and into the teens. A spokesperson for the service says if you plan on traveling today, take extra time getting to your destination. RIVER FALLS - The Spring Valley/Elmwood co-op prep wrestling team didn't stumble of ther path they set themselves on to win the Northern Badger Wrestling Classic at River Falls High School. After taking a big lead in Friday's session, the No. 1 ranked Redbirds continued onward to winning the whole meet title along with the Division 2 crown by amassing 301 points. Boyceville was a distant second with 262 points but the Bulldogs won Division 3. Host RFHS won the Division 1 title with 207 points. SVE had 11 of its 14 wrestlers place in the top 12 but just one champion.
LA CROSSE - Ellsworth High School's wrestling team showed itself to be the best in Division 2 by edging out top-ranked Luxemburg-Casco and Two Rivers to win the Bi-State Classic at the La Crosse Center Saturday. No. 2 Ellsworth won both its division and the overall meet title with 255 points, just two ahead of No. 3 Luxembug-Casco while No. 1 Two Rivers was third in Division 2 with 230 points and fourth overall behind Division 3 champ Stratford, who had 236 points. Holmen won Division 1 with 215 points. EHS had two champions, Jens Lantz at 126 and Gabe Frandsen at 160.
RIVER FALLS - No. 1 ranked Spring Valley/Elmwood is well on their way to winning the Northern Badger prep wrestling tournament. Prep basketball players, Olivia Rohl from Prescott and Kyle Murphy from Ellsworth are the Pierce County Herald's Athletes of the Week. Murphy notched a double-double effort 11 points and 15 rebounds against Durand last week, lifting EHS to a 55-44 road win. Murphy also led the Panthers in assists with four.
HOUSTON - The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers football team will embark on their final game of the 2013 season tonight when they face the Syracuse Orange in the Texas Bowl at Reliant Stadium in Houston. The team has been in Houston preparing for the final showdown for the better part of a week as they try for their ninth win of the season. This season the Gophers have already won four straight Big 10 games, something it hadn't done since 1973, have already won eight games for the first time since 2003 and have a chance to finish with nine wins for only
A fire which began in the Ellsworth High School wrestling room, took place and was put out this morning. The fire reportedly began around 4:30 a.m. According to Ellsworth School District Superintendent Barry Cain, it was a mobile air-cleaning unit inside the wrestling room which caught fire and caused damage to room.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 2 ranked Augsburg College wrestling team, coached by Ellsworth native Mark Matzek, will compete in the prestigious Midlands Invitational meet Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill. at Northwestern University’s Welsh-Ryan Arena. At the midway point of the season the Auggies have a 2-0 record in dual meets, having defeated Waldorf College of Iowa 44-9 and Minnesota State-Moorhead 34-9.
