BOYCEVILLE - Spring Valley/Elmwood prep wrestling co-op team survived a determined challenge from Boyceville to win the WIAA Division 3 Boyceville Regional Saturday. The No. 3 ranked Redbirds finished first in the seven-team meet with 259 points to No. 6 Boyceville's 251 while No. 4 Clear Lake scored 170 points, Cadott 119, Mondovi 118, Glenwood City 80.5 and Durand's 77. The host Bulldogs led 251-250 late in the wrestleback rounds when SVE's Quinton Elliott pinned Kolton Schneider of Durand in 5:54 of his wrestleback match at 182 pounds.

Both the Durand and Colfax prep girls basketball teams secured first place outright in their respective conferences Friday evening. No. 4 Durand topped Prescott 39-28 at Durand while Colfax topped Mondovi 57-31. Durand won the Middle Border Conference and Colfax won the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. The Cardinals threw a scare into the top-ranked Panthers, 20-1 overall, though. PHS led 19-14 at halftime. But the home team outscored Prescott 19-6 in the third quarter to turn the contest in their favor. Durand had three players in double figures scoring led by Morganne Gruber's 13 points.
WIAA prep wrestling regional tournaments will take place this Saturday. Ellsworth will be hosting its own WIAA Division 2 regional meet beginning at 10 a.m. at Ellsworth High School. The teams involved are Bloomer/Colfax, Cornell/Gilman/Lake Holcombe, Baldwin-Woodville, Prescott, Eau Claire Regis/Chippewa Falls McDonell, Stanley-Boyd/Owen-Withee/Thorp and the host Panthers. No. 3 ranked Ellsworth is fresh off winning the Middle Border Conference title for the 12th straight time and it’s their 37th title in school history.

ELMWOOD - A dominating first half and third quarter helped the Elmwood/Plum City girls basketball team top Spring Valley 59-41 Tuesday in the 14th annual Chet Lien Memorial Basketball Game at Elmwood High School. Junior Cheyanne Catura set a new scoring record for the one-year old Elmwood/PC program by scoring a game-high 32 points, beating her old record of 25 points set a week against Alma/Pepin.
The Pierce County Herald's Athletes of the Week are Ellsworth's Adam Walter and Plum City's Cheyanne Catura Walter won the 132-pound title at last weekend's Middle Border Conference wrestling meet in Prescott. His points were crucial in helping Ellsworth win its 12th straight MBC title and 37th in school history. Catura had a season-best 25 points for the Elmwood/Plum City girls basketball team in a non-conference win over Alma/Pepin.
