BLACK RIVER FALLS - It wasn't just Purple Pride but Purple Perseverance which helped Ellsworth High School's football team outlast Black River Falls in a hard-played WIAA Division 4, Level 2 playoff game Friday evening. No. 3 ranked Ellsworth advanced with a 38-33 win over the Tigers setting up next weekend's rematch with No. 4 Somerset in Level 3. Somerset downed Prescott 28-14, also on Friday. The momentum of the contest surged back and forth and the first half alone felt like a game unto itself with Ellsworth ahead 25-20 at the break.
The Ellsworth High School football team's WIAA Level 3 playoff contest vs. Somerset will take place Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Fuller-Symes Field. In order to avoid conflict with the school play "Monty Python's Spamalot", the Friday evening performance has been cancelled and the Sunday performance has been rescheduled to 4 p.m. that afternoon. Those with tickets to the Friday show can either transfer them to the Sunday show or get a refund at the high school office. WISCONSIN RAPIDS - Three prep cross country runners from Pierce County took part in the 101st WIAA State Cross Country Meet Saturday. Spring Valley senior Emma Gaustad reach her goal of breaking the 16:00 mark. She finished the 4000-meter Division 3 girls' race in 15:58.6. By reaching her goal she was able to finish 20th in her third state cross country meet. Prescott sophomore Amanda Murphy ran in her first state meet. She finished 94th out of 151 runners in the Division 2 girls race with a time of 16:45. Also having a first-rime meet was Elmwood/Plum City junior Noah Wells.

SOMERSET - Despite committing five turnovers, the No. 4 ranked Somerset High School football team was still able to get past Prescott in a WIAA Division 4, Level 2 playoff game Friday evening. Prescott took the early lead 7-0 on a one-yard TD run by quarterback Alex Helmer. But Somerset scored twice in the second quarter to take a 14-7 halftime lead. The Spartans pulled away midway through the fourth quarter after a 44-yard touchdown run by Max Praschak. He finished with 198 yards rushing. Somerset improves to 10-1 overall and will play at No.
Ellsworth and Prescott’s high school football teams are just one step away from meeting up for the second time this season. But both teams have to take that step in WIAA Division 4, Level 2 playoff match-ups this evening. The No.3 ranked Panthers, the top seed of Group A bracket, is at No. 5 seeded Black River Falls while Prescott, the third seed, takes on second seeded and No. 4 ranked Somerset in Somerset.
Three Pierce County runners will compete in the 101st WIAA State Cross County Meet at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids Saturday. Spring Valley's Emma Gaustad will compete in the Division 3 girls race which is the first race of the meet at 11:30 a.m. Following this race will be the Division 2 race Prescott's Amanda Murphy will be competing in. Elmwood/Plum City's Noah Wells will compete in the Division 3 boys race at 1:50 p.m. This will be Gaustad's third straight state meet as she competed with the SVHS girls squad the past two seasons.
LITCHFIELD, Minn. -- More than three-dozen central Minnesota students were safely evacuated from a school bus yesterday morning before it was engulfed in flames near Litchfield. \ Officials with the Litchfield School District say the driver detected a "hot smell"in the bus before noticing smoke coming from a heater control panel.
