As images on the newly redesigned web site for the Pierce County Economic Development Corp. scrolled on a giant screen behind him, retiring UW-Extension Professor Greg Andrews offered persuasive arguments that photos depicting agriculture should be added to the visual mix. Nearly one-fifth of jobs, a sixth of all tax receipts and a proportionate ratio of local commerce and human capital that comprise Pierce' communities comes from the ag sector.
HAMMOND -- Plans by a major food wholesaler to move large warehouse and food processing operations from two suburban Twin Cities locations to Hammond may mean up to 330 new jobs for the community over the next year. Pat Miller, vice-president of Russ Davis Wholesale said Wednesday the availability of the vacant Hammond Cold Storage complex, its proximity to I-94 and plenty of room for expansion offered the perfect recipe for the employee-owned company to grow its business.
A proposed mining project in Upper Michigan would affect northeast Wisconsin. Officials recently held a public hearing that drew split opinions about a plan by Aquila Resources to open a gold, silver, copper, and zinc mine just north of the Wisconsin-UP border north of Marinette. The firm commissioned a study by the University of Minnesota-Duluth which found that Marinette County would share in the estimated 1,330 construction jobs, 450 permanent jobs, and $20 million in annual tax revenues. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials have released county-by-county harvest totals from the recent nine-day gun deer season. In Pierce County, hunters registered 1,204 bucks (compared with 1,226 in 2014) and 2,130 does (2,107 last year). St. Croix recorded 966 bucks (938 last year) and 1,525 does (1,643 last year). UPDATE: St. Croix and Pierce County sheriff's investigators are seeking help from the public in the Spring Valley area to locate an abandoned vehicle thought to have been involved in a Michigan homicide. Spring Valley Police Chief John DuBois said Wednesday morning a lock was cut off the main gate at the U.S. Army Corps property at the Eau Galle Recreation Area near Spring Valley sometime between Friday, Nov. 13 and Monday, Nov. 16. There was evidence of forced entry to the office and maintenance buildings.
Vicky Howe, general manager and longtime sales representative at the Pierce County Herald, has decided to turn in her office keys and join her husband, Chuck in retirement. Howe, who joined the Herald as general manager in August, 2007, following a 12-year run as service manager at Ellsworth Ford, is looking forward to spending more time with her five grandchildren and her seven horses -- two of which are 30 years old.
HANCOCK -- A crop-dusting pilot killed when his plane crashed Wednesday evening in central Wisconsin has been identified as 37-year-old Robert Dopp of Beldenville. Julie Perrin, who co-owns Agri CAIR LLC with her husband, Jim, said this was Dopp's first year flying with their three-plane operation. She described Dopp as an experienced pilot with "an amazing personality.
