What does it take to lead a great book discussion?

In preparation for 'The Big Read' in the St. Croix Valley, ArtReach St. Croix will be offering workshops on how to have a great book discussion.

The free workshops are two hours long and open to the public. The workshops will be taught by scholarly author and retired literature professor, Dr. Carolyn Wedin. The workshops are offered in preparation for The Big Read in the St. Croix Valley, which will be focused on "Love Medicine" by Minnesota author Louise Erdrich.

This two-hour training will give attendees the confidence to lead a great book discussion. Dr. Wedin, retired professor of literature at University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, will share her passion for great stories and great book discussions. She will help participants access the power of literatureand help them discover ways to have a highly participatory conversation about any book. Dr. Wedin will also focus a portion of the workshop specifically on how to lead a discussion about Love Medicine.

 Everyone is welcome to attend one of three trainings around the valley, bring a bag lunch if desired.

Stillwater Public Library:  Monday, March 9, from 4-6 p.m., 224 N. 3rd Street, Stillwater

St. Croix Falls Public Library: Tuesday, March 10, from 4-6 p.m., 230 S. Washington Street, St. Croix Falls


River Falls Public Library: Thursday, March 1,2 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 140 Union Street, River Falls.

The Big Read in the St. Croix Valley is a one book, one community program that brings together residents from throughout the St. Croix Valley around a common book. This year’s programming will include a variety of literary, visual and performing arts opportunities centered on the themes found in “Love Medicine.”

Numerous copies of “Love Medicine” and book club kits can be found in circulation at local libraries throughout the St. Croix Valley. In addition, ArtReach has distributed hundreds of Read and Release copies of the book throughout the St. Croix Valley in Little Free Libraries, laundromats, coffee shops and doctor’s offices. If you prefer to purchase you own copy of “Love Medicine,” Valley Bookseller in Stillwater and Chapter 2 Books in Hudson are providing a 15% discount on the title.
