SUPERINTENDENT'S COLUMN: Service Learning Day part of larger focus
On Sept. 18, Ellsworth High School had its annual "Day of Service" event in which students and staff are involved in various service learning activities around the community and in the middle school and elementary school classrooms. This has traditionally been a senior activity but was expanded to include all students this year.
The Day of Service for high school students was developed in our district's strategic plan as one activity to emphasize the importance of community service for all. This event has been a great success and is now only one ingredient in a larger curriculum that focuses on community service and ultimately leads to the opportunity for all high school students to earn a service learning letter for their work. Although this year's event had to be modified due to inclement weather we still saw great things happen.
I would like to thank all of the students and staff who once again participated in this event. I would especially like to thank all those who worked to plan this event and develop opportunities for our students throughout the community and in the classrooms. It is wonderful learning experience and we should all be proud of what our students and staff accomplish with this Day of Service.
