Ellsworth and Prescott end cross country seasons at Hayward
Ellsworth's girls cross country team found themselves finishing in the middle of the pack at the Hayward sectional on Friday, Oct. 20. The Panthers completed their season with a seventh-place team finish, which put them below six teams and above seven.
Julia VanWatermeulen led the Panthers in her last high school cross country meet with a 23rd-place finish and a 5k time of 23:50.0.
CeCe Groh finished behind VanWatermeulen with a time of 24:59.1, which earned her a 31st-place finish. Freshman runner Sophie Vogel came in shortly after Groh and finished with a time of 25:07.9.
Rachel Mancuso (48th), Claire Straub (56th), Freya Nelson (65th) and Jolene Schultz (67th) completed Ellsworth's varsity seven.
The Panthers finished the meet with 193 team points. St. Croix Central claimed the sectional title with a total of 62 team points.
The Ellsworth boys team did not have as successful of a meet as the girls team, and found themselves finishing in 13th of the 14 teams that competed at Hayward. The Panthers only had six varsity runners on the boys side, and finished with 277 team points.
Kyle Perkins set the tone for the Panthers with a 43rd-place finish and a 5k time of 20:38.6. Addison Peters was the second Panther to cross the finish line in the boys race, and he finished with a time of 21:05.5, which earned him a 51st-place finish. Nick Erickson came in less than 12 seconds and two places behind Peters.
Matthew Williams (63rd), Roy Roberts (67th) and Jonah Vogel (71st) also ran in Friday's meet for the Panthers.
St. Croix Central also won the sectional title on the boys side, and will compete at the WIAA Division 2 state championships along with the SCC girls team.
The Cardinal girls finished below the Panthers at Friday's meet, and ended up with a total of 217 team points, which gave them a 10th-place finish.
The Cardinals were led by Kjerstin Carlson who finished in 30th place with a time of 24:52.1.
Mari Sommer added 35 points to her team's total score with a 5k time of 25:02.9. Hayley Hillman finished less than 10 seconds behind Sommer, and came in 38th place overall.
The last four Cardinal runners to come in were Kira Penk (55th), Ella Linder (61st), Megan Gilles (76th) and Isabelle Lonetti (82nd).
Prescott's boys team came in 12th place overall with 263 points, just above Ellsworth.
Dylan Rieken was the first Cardinal to complete the 5k, and he did so with a time of 19:49.4, which gave him a 23rd-place finish.
Cody Hauenstein finished in 39th place overall with a time of 20:32.2. Tristan Winkler was the third Cardinal to finish the race, and he came in with a time of 21:39.4 and a 61st-place finish.
Blaise Schnorr (66th), Josh Dickey (74th), Walker Lenz (80th) and Ben Barksdale (88th) were the final Cardinal runners to cross the finish line.
