Track and field: Day 1 of state meet treats Pierce County competitors well

Day 1 of the 2018 WIAA State Track and Field Meet is in the books along with some new school records set by Pierce County state competitors.

The Prescott Cardinals' girls' team competed in three events on the first day of the state meet on Friday, June 1 and came away with two new school records.

The Cardinals' 4x200 team made up of Grace Carlson, Jessie Urman, Tori Benck and Abby Syverson took fourth with a time of 1:45.48 to qualify for the Saturday, June 2 finals and break their own Prescott school record once again.

Prescott's girls' 4x100 team also left the UW-La Crosse track with a new all-time best program time. Megan Gilles, Carlson, Benck and Syverson completed the 4x100 relay in 50.76 seconds, but were unable to advance to Saturday's finals with their 12th-place finish.

Ellsworth's Aly Reuvers represented the Panthers in the 200-meter dash and dropped .95 seconds off of her sectional time for a 12th-place finish. Prescott's Syverson came in behind Reuvers for the first time this season with a time of 26.58 seconds, which was a .22-second improvement from her state-qualifying time at the Colby sectional.

Ellsworth's boys' 4x400 team placed 16th out of 18 relay teams in Friday's preliminaries. Jared Lansing, Alfonso Vilas Boas, Max Ekverne-Jamme and Alvaro Torres wrapped up their 2018 track seasons by completing the relay in three minutes, 34.10 seconds.

Prescott's Westy Bartsch will compete in the shot put on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Day 2's running events are also scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. with Division 3 proceeding both Division 2 and Division 1 finals.

Bosshart and Todd excel on Day 1

Spring Valley's Dylan and Bosshart and Elmwood/Plum City's Kassye Todd made their presence known at the 2018 WIAA State Track and Field Meet on Friday, June 1.

Bosshart competed in the 110-meter hurdle preliminaries where he ran a personal-best time of 15.80 seconds, which was a .41-second improvement from his Boyceville sectional time. Bosshart's 15.80-second time earned the Spring Valley junior an eighth-place finish in prelims and a ticket to Saturday's finals.

Todd had another impressive showing in the 3,200-meter run on Friday where she cut over 50 seconds off of her sectional time. The EPC senior completed the two mile race in 11:41.49 for an eighth-place finish and a state team point for the Wolves.

Todd will return to the UW-La Crosse track on Saturday to try and find more success in the 800 and 1,600. Todd's sophomore teammate Katie Feuker will join her senior leader in Saturday's 800.

Spring Valley's girls' 4x200 team also competed on the first day of the state meet and took 13th-place in Friday's prelims. Erin Stans, Maddie Jacobson, Shye Klatt and Brianna O'Brien will not be moving on to Saturday's finals, but did drop .67 seconds off of their state-qualifying time.
