Track and field: Panthers test the waters at Menomonie

Outdoor running conditions will be swamp-like for the time being, but the Menomonie Mustang's indoor facilities were put to use by the Ellsworth Panthers track and field team on Friday, March 15.

After their first nine days of practice, the Panthers got in an indoor meet where they faced the Mustangs, the Boyceville Bulldogs and McDonnell Central's girls' team. Both Ellsworth teams finished in second place behind the Mustangs and brought home plenty of first-place individual finishes.

Aly Reuvers began her final high school track and field season with a dominant start in Menomonie where she took first place in two of her four events. The senior sprinter won the girls' 40-meter dash with a time of 5.55 seconds and claimed a matching finish in the 300 after crossing the finish line at 46.52. Reuvers also finished second in the long jump and was on the Panthers' third-place 4x400-meter relay team.

The Panthers' girls' team also received a first-place finish from sophomore Lily Puhrman who won the 400 with a time of 72.11. The Panthers earned a top finish from Claire Straub, CeCe Groh, Sophie Vogel and Shelby Schultz who ran an uncontested 4x800-meter relay time of 13 minutes, 14.09 seconds.

The Ellsworth boys were led in scoring by freshman Max Grand who made a statement at his first varsity track and field meet. Grand won both the 300- and 400-meter dashes and took second in the 40 with a time of 5.08 seconds.

Jordan Schlicting added another first-place finish to the Panthers' 41 total team points by clearing 10 feet, six inches to win the boys' pole vault. The Panthers also tested their boys' 4x800-meter relay team of Johnny Zhusupov, John Gillespie, Ashton Quade and Auston Follensbee who finished in first place after racing without any opposition.

The Panthers will continue their season on Thursday, March 21, when they compete at the St. Mary Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
