Track and field: Prescott, Ellsworth hold their own against MBC's best

Ellsworth freshman Max Grand took fourth place in the 100-meter dash at the 15-team Amery Invite hosted by Osceola on Tuesday, April 30. Grand completed the race in 12.13 seconds.

The Ellsworth Panthers and Prescott Cardinals track and field teams began their competitive week at Amery's Invitational in Osceola on Tuesday, April 30, and were well-represented by various athletes.

The Prescott girls finished in third place out of 16 teams with 87 points, coming in three points behind the second-place St. Croix Central Panthers.

Junior Megan Gilles raised the bar for the Cardinals by winning both the 100- and 300-meter hurdle events. Gilles won the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.33 seconds and crossed the finish line at 51.01 in the 300 hurdles, defeating Osceola's Katie Haase in both races.

Gilles' first-place finishes were matched by the Cardinals' 4x100- and 4x200-meter relay teams. The winning 4x200 team came in over four seconds before the second-place St. Croix Falls team and featured last year's state qualifiers: Grace Carlson, Tori Benck, Jessie Urman and Abby Syverson. Together the four sophomores completed the race in one minute, 52 seconds.

The 4x100 race was more competitive, but the Cardinals were able to edge past Ellsworth by 0.78 seconds. Gilles, Syverson, Urman and Carlson put together a first-place time of 52.40 seconds to beat the Panther team that featured Aly Reuvers, Stella Anderson, Marina Boley and Kaitlin Peterson.

The Panther girls finished tied for 12th place with 20 team points, and aside from their 4x100 team, were led by senior Reuvers who earned fourth-place finishes in the 100-meter dash and the long jump. Reuvers completed the 100 in 13.56 seconds, finishing 0.07 seconds behind Prescott's Carlson, and recorded a mark of 14 feet, 11.50 inches in the long jump.

The Prescott and Ellsworth boys' teams earned eighth- and 10th-place finishes in the team rankings and were led by Jordan Schlicting and Wyatt Holum.

Schlicting, Ellsworth's senior pole vaulter, took first in his field event by clearing 11-06. Underclassmen Braden Matzek added four points to the Panthers' team score by taking fifth in the pole vault with a height of 9-06.

Holum finished as the Cardinals' top place-winner after clearing 6-00 in the high jump. No other high jump athlete was able to clear 5-10 on Tuesday.

The Panthers and Cardinals also left Osceola with a few fourth-place finishes before Amery's Invitational was completed. Ellsworth freshman Max Grand took fourth in the 29-participant 100 after recording a time of 12.13 seconds. Prescott earned two fourth-place finishes from freshman Josh Gergen who completed the 200 in 24.43 seconds and junior Brett Nelson who ran a 300 hurdle time of 44.83 seconds.

Ellsworth and Prescott will continue their challenging week at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 3, at New Richmond's Stan Barr Relays.
