Volleyball: Playoffs within reach

The 2018 regular volleyball season is nearly completed, and teams have found out where they'll begin their playoff journeys on Tuesday, Oct. 16.

The Ellsworth Panthers and Prescott Cardinals will both compete in the Division 2 Sectional 1 bracket. The Panthers (21-6) received a No. 3 seed and will face the No. 14-seeded Northwestern Tigers (4-23) in Ellsworth on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Prescott (10-13) received the ninth seed and will travel to Rice Lake on Tuesday to face the No. 8-seeded Warriors (12-13).

The Spring Valley Cardinals (12-12) were given a No. 6 seed in the Division 3 Sectional 1 bracket, and they'll face their Dunn-St. Croix Elk Mound (22-8) opponents. The Mounders earned a No. 3 seed and will host the Cardinals on Tuesday. The two teams faced off on Thursday, Sept. 27, at Spring Valley during the regular season, and the Mounders went home with a 3-0 win over the Cardinals.

Elmwood (7-17) and Plum City (0-20) will both try their hands in the Division 4 Sectional 1 bracket, which will also kick off on Tuesday, Oct. 16. The Raiders earned a playoff home game with the No. 8 seed and will host the No. 9-seeded Cornell Knights (4-14). Plum City will travel to Eau Claire on Tuesday as the No. 14 seed to take on the No. 3-seeded Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran Lancers (16-7).

All opening playoff games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Spring Valley, Elmwood and Plum City still have one more regular season game to complete before they enter the postseason. The Cardinals will travel to Glenwood City (3-10) on Thursday, Oct. 11, to face the Hilltoppers, the Raiders will host Mondovi (7-12) on Thursday and the Blue Devils will head to Colfax (22-5) to close out their regular season on the same night.
