Wrestling: SVE claims shorthanded dual; Tigers' late comeback too much for Prescott

Eight of the 14 bouts between the Spring Valley/Elmwood Cardinals and the Glenwood City Hilltoppers resulted in a forfeit on Thursday, Jan. 3, but the Cardinals were able to claim an 18-point advantage in the shorthanded dual.

The Cardinals split the six bouts that were wrestled on Thursday night, and took advantage of the Hilltoppers' six open weights as they marched to a 48-30 Dunn-St. Croix Conference dual win.

Nate Fesenmaier, Travis Marty and Santana Schlegel all earned pins for the Cardinals and gave their team the 18 points to claim the dual win. Senior co-captain Schlegel pinned Kyla Hoffa in 41 seconds to claim the quickest win by fall of the night.

The Cardinals forfeited both the 220- and 285-pound bouts, but their 12 giveaway points didn't compare to Glenwood City's 36.

The Cardinals are now 3-0 in dual meets, and they'll compete in their next tournament on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they head to head to New Richmond for the 9:30 a.m. Tiger Invitational.

New Richmond 37, Prescott 36

Prescott and New Richmond wrestling fans were welcomed back after the holiday break with an eventful, evenly-matched Middle Border Conference dual on Thursday, Jan. 3, but unfortunately for Cardinals fans, the dual ended in the Tigers' favor.

The Tigers claimed a 37-36 win over the Cardinals after the two teams split the 12 bouts that weren't decided by a forfeit.

Prescott's 220-pound Joe Schulte began the night by earning a 28-second pin over Chase Demulling in the first bout of the night, and 195-pound Ethan Luksich ended the night with the same results by claiming a second-period pin over New Richmond's Ryan Muller in the final bout of the night. But the Tigers rose to the occasion by turning their late 30-28 deficit into a 37-36 win with a pin and a decision win in the final three bouts of the night.

The Cardinals are now 1-3 in dual meets, but they'll return to tournament competition on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they head to Cadott where wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
