Springbrook 4-H Club member Emma Trautmiller imagined an ingenious way to combine two of her favorite things, ice cream and s'mores, and it won her first place in the annual statewide contest to come up with a new flavor sponsored by Cedar Crest Ice Cream. "I like all the things in s'mores, like graham crackers and marshmallows, so I made them a little bit smaller than a whole s'more so they would be able to fit in ice cream and into one bite. I never tested it, but it seems like it could work. I love s'mores in the summer so that's what I named it, Wisconsin Campfire S'more.
Even though high water forced events into nearby parking lots, this year's Harvest Fest once again drew large crowds to Stillwater's riverfront. The 13th annual edition featured a scarecrow contest, chili cook-off, kids costume parade, kids tractor pull, pie eating contest, face painting, kids games, live music, pumpkin regatta, tipi living exhibit, 5K, beer garden, vendor market, battle to paddle competition, giant pumpkin drop and the main event, the giant pumpkin weigh-off.
The 40th annual UFO Days in Elmwood July 27-29 drew earthlings from all over the region, who celebrated Elmwood's unique "UFO Capital" heritage with bus tours of sighting spots, an "out-of-this-world" cake decorating competition and sidewalk chalk contest, classic car show, parade, chicken poop raffle and more small-town festival fun.

On Monday, March 20, a 250-pound pig fell off a truck onto Interstate 90 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Multiple agencies including the South Dakota Highway Patrol and South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks responded to the call. They rescued the pig and transported it to the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society where he was treated for road rash and began a five-day waiting period during which his owner could reclaim him.
